Overview of Your Visit

Appointment Overview: Surgical Abortion and D & C Procedure

Your appointment at the Clinic will last between 2 and 3 hours. Although abortion and D & C procedures take between 3 and 8 minutes to complete, the remainder of your appointment will be spent completing medical forms, meeting with a counsellor, and in post procedure recovery.

  • Upon arrival you will be greeted by a receptionist who will ask you to complete a medical history form. While completing the form, please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
  • A counsellor will then meet with you privately to explain the abortion or D & C procedure, review your medical history, talk to you about birth control methods, and answer any questions or concerns you may have. If your blood type is Rh-negative you will be given a WinRho (RhoGAM) shot to protect future pregnancies.
  • You will then proceed to the pre-operative waiting room.
  • From the pre-operative waiting room a nurse will take you to the operative room where you will meet your doctor and the nurses that will be assisting with your procedure. At this time, an ultrasound will be performed. In addition, you will be given IV sedation medication to help keep you relaxed and comfortable during the abortion or D & C procedure. Please note that you will be awake during the procedure.
  • The doctor will perform an internal Pelvic Exam, give you local anesthesia, and complete the procedure.
  • Once the procedure is completed a nurse will accompany you to the recovery room where you will rest for approximately 30 minutes and be offered a drink and a light snack.
  • When you are comfortable and ready to leave a nurse will provide you with post procedure care instructions.
